Some say that Facebook is losing its sheen. New restrictions,  privacy issues, promoted posts, constant advertising are annoying a lot of users and making them looking for alternatives. Google Plus is one of them.

Google Plus started to be seen as ghost town and now it is the second largest social network in the world, after Facebook. A lot of people don’t know it and are very reluctant (like I was) when it comes to use Google Plus. So, let’s clear up the myths and discover why you should use it!

  • Facebook versus Google Plus

While Facebook focuses on connections between existing friends, Google+ builds connections according to common interests. Google Plus is set up to let people define exactly what they want to see and from whom. You go to Facebook to know about your friends and that does not make it less interesting whatsoever. Actually, Facebook has done a remarkable job to keep me updated about my friends and to discover people I haven’t seen since Kindergarten.  But on the other hand you go to Google Plus when you want to share or look for content that appeals directly to your interests, which can be different from your friends.

  • Google Plus Explained

Just like friending people on Facebook, you can add people your Google+  Circles. You can create circles about anything you want and add anyone you want as well. Let’s say you are addicted to English Literature, you can create a circle with your favourite authors. Similar to Twitter, Google+ allows you to follow anyone without confirmation. Much easier, right? You can even post content to just one circle controlling who sees it.

Google+  also has groups which are the Google+ Communities. These can be about any topic as well. By joining communities you get to know people it that community and get a great exposure at the same time.

Finally, you have the +1 Button. It is quite different from the Like Button. With +1 you can build your reputation as it recommends publicly ans shares useful content. You +1  search results directly and it will appear right bellow the search results. You are indirectly recommending  content to your followers.

As you can see, it all revolves around content.

  • The Perks of being on Google Plus

The best things about Google+ ? Well, Hangouts without a question. You know Skype, right? Now, imagine Skype with better quality, without sound bugs and without the need to update or buy a new version that allows you to speak with more than one people at the same time. That is Google Hangouts! You can have a virtual chat with how many people you want and you just need a mic and a camera (Duuh).

Plus, Google+  is the way your Google Profile will quickly climb the search engine rankings. By using keywords in your profile you will get ranked in Google Search Engine, which is the same to say, your SEO will boom!

  • Give it a chance

It is true that when you log in, Google Plus seems a bit empty. But, start by looking for people that might interest you: politicians, bloggers, celebrities…welll whoever you like. Check who are they following and who they have in their circles and their content and establish contact and soon you will be +1’d!!
